If you live in or are planning to visit the southwestern United States this weekend, you’re in for a rare treat: an annular solar eclipse will occur Sunday afternoon. This is the first solar eclipse viewable within the continental United States in more than 18 years.
If you’re near the California-Oregon border, Reno, the Grand Canyon, Albuquerque, or Lubbock, Texas, you’ll see an amazing view of the sun’s corona appears to spill over the moon’s edges on all sides. It’s dangerous to look directly at the eclipse, so if you plan on experiencing this rare sight, you should protect your eyes with the proper equipment. Ned Potter of ABC News recommends No. 14 arc welders glass, and Eric Holthaus with The Wall Street Journal has more recommendations if you’re interested.
ScanMyPhotos.com digitizes tens of millions of photos in our Irvine, California headquarters so we will not be able to view this rare eclipse in-person. We’re relying on you to show us!
If you won’t be able to view the eclipse but you’re dying to see it, watch Panasonic’s live video stream from Japan’s Mt. Fuji.
